What an incredible summer! 💛
Over the past three weeks, we had the privilege of partnering with Fresno Unified School District’s Expanded Learning Program to welcome young learners for an unforgettable experience filled with creativity, environmental exploration, hands-on art, social-emotional learning, and discovery.
From meeting live honeybees and learning from Kingsburg Honey, to creating murals, making candles, planting pollinator gardens, and celebrating each student’s accomplishments, our campers inspired us every single day. Watching their confidence grow, friendships blossom, and curiosity about the natural world flourish has been the greatest reward.
A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated teaching artists, lead instructors, assistants, paraprofessionals, volunteers, community partners, Fresno Unified staff, and the families who entrusted us with their children. Together, we created something truly special.

We had an amazing time today at Saturday School! We will be back in two weeks (March 18th) for our next session.
1st and 3rd Saturdays we are at the museum with our instructors @pmillustrations and @cakedbykaliyah teaching “History through the Arts.”
Today, our instructors taught about the the history of kente cloth and the students created their own paper woven textile with adinkra symbols.
The youth got to find inspiration in our current exhibit, primarily in embedded in the quilts.
This is why we do what we do!
We had a great time today celebrating Black History Month with our Fresno community! We brought out the horses for this one! Here are 5 fun Black Cowboy facts:
1. Historians have estimated that roughly 25% of cowboys in the American West were African American.
2. Even the name “cowboy” itself is owed directly to Black wranglers. White cowboys were initially referred to as “cowhands.” In contrast, “cowboy” was used as a pejorative term for Black riders. Its use was a carry-over from slavery and the southern plantation era, where “boy” was used to refer to a Black male regardless of age.
3. Black cowboys were usually given the wildest, most unruly horses – which they had to train in order to ride them.
4. Ranchers hired on the newly-freed Black cowboys, whose cattle handling skills and strong work ethic quickly earned them the respect of their White counterparts.
5. Bill Pickett (the namesake of the all black rodeo: The Bill Pickett Rodeo) born in 1870 in Texas, created “bulldogging,” a move in which he rode alongside a steer, jumped onto its shoulders and brought the steer down by digging his feet into the ground. The modern day version of the move is called steer wrestling and remains one the most intriguing exhibitions throughout rodeo history.

An organic and unscripted moment to be remembered and cherished!
We had a great time today curating our upcoming exhibit! Black History into the Future will be on display through the month of February.

In honor of Black Music Month, let's take a second to honor the contributions that Dizzy Gillespie made to the jazz industry!
On this day, Fats Waller was born. He lead modern groundwork for the jazz piano. Some of his most popular songs include: Ain’t Misbehavin’, Your Feet’s Too Big, and Honeysuckle Rose. He was also one of the first jazz musicians to master the organ!
Alain LeRoy Locke coined the term “new negro”. Locke was not fond of the term “Harlem Renaissance'', because it left out other cities where African Americans embraced the concept of self determination. When studying abroad at Oxford, Locke was refused admission to many of its colleges and discriminated against on the campus, where other students refused to share housing and amenities with him. Locke later accepted an assistant professor position at the historic Howard University in the English department during the Harlem Renaissance. Locke’s book, The New Negro, includes essays, poetry, and fiction all aimed at encouraging and uplifting African Americans to explore new heights.

W.E.B. Dubois was a prominent sociologist, historian, activist, author and writer. Dubois was one of the founders of the Niagara Movement, established in 1905, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), established in 1909. With the NAACP, Dubois was given the position of Director of Publicity and Research in 1910, where his primary role was editing The Crisis, the NAACP’s magazine dedicated to uplifting the African American community.

Paul Laurence Dunbar was one of the first Black poets to gain recognition in America for his great literary technique in poetry. In his work, Dunbar portrayed all aspects of the African American experience objectively in literary form, the good and the bad, and its triumphs and tragedies.

Wells championed both equal rights for African Americans and women’s suffrage. Ida B. Wells, horrified by the conditions in the south, documented lynchings in the United States in an effort to stop them. Wells used her voice to write articles telling African Americans to flee the horrors of the south. She was among the original founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), established February 12, 1909.

The Harlem Renaissance was a time of great hustle and bustle, beginning after World War I, and lasting up until the mid-1930s. The Harlem Renaissance was fueled by an influx of African Americans moving to the North. These droves sought a way out of the oppressive Jim Crow South, where their chances of economic prosperity were slim to none. And although their chances for economic opportunity weren’t as fruitful as intended, Harlem quickly became a cultural hub bursting with innovations in literature, social ideology, art, and music driven by the African Americans. These creative forces reflected their experiences and expressed their frustrations through their work.
